You take great measures to protect your oral health. You brush and floss your teeth daily. You visit your dentist twice a year. But, do you have an oral cancer screening performed regularly? The long-term survival rate of oral cancers is bleak because the cancer is not often diagnosed until it has reached advanced stages. However, with a regular screening for oral cancer, you will detect the cancer early, increasing the 5-year survival rate from 62 percent to 83 percent. At Bethel Dental, we want to see you fully protect your oral health and overall health, which is why we are the only dental office in Ghana that has the technology for conducting a quick 2-minute, noninvasive oral cancer screening.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is classified as cancers that affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, soft palate, floor of the mouth, hard palate, sinuses and throat. When oral cancer is caught in the early stages, it is highly treatable. Unfortunately, only 31 percent of those with oral cancer are diagnosed during this stage. Most cases are not diagnosed until after the cancer has spread to the surrounding tissues, decreasing the 5-year survival rate to only 62 percent. After the cancer has spread to more distant areas of the body, the 5-year survival rate decreases even further to only 38 percent.
Often, oral cancers are not diagnosed until they have reached the later stages due to the fact little to no symptoms are experienced during the early stages. In addition, the lack of education regarding regular oral cancer screenings further allows the cancers to go undetected for too long. However, with regular screenings, we are able to detect cancerous and precancerous cells in the earliest stages of development to allow for quick, effective treatment.
