Why Do I Have Receding Gums?

Man looking at teeth in mirrorOver time, you may notice that your gum line has started to recede. Although many often believe that this is only a cosmetic issue, it can cause significant damages to your oral health if not treated. The shrinkage is often due to an underlying issue, like periodontal disease, which needs immediate treatment. As more of the tooth’s root becomes exposed, the greater the risk for more extensive damage becomes, such as tooth loss. As soon as you notice a change in your gum line, it is essential that you visit your dentist right away for a proactive treatment plan.

Causes of Gum Recession

Gum recession occurs when the bone that supports the tissue begins to demineralize. As a result, it causes it to withdraw from a high position on the teeth. Although many believe that it is due to brushing too hard, there are other factors that more largely contribute to a reduction in the gum line than just that of a hard-bristled toothbrush.

Gum Disease: Gum disease is among one of the leading reasons for the tissue damage, which affects roughly half of all adults. When the tissue becomes infected, it causes the supporting structures to deteriorate. Over time, the health of the jaw bone will become compromised, causing it to pull away from its proper position.

Bruxism: Grinding and clenching of the teeth, causes significant strain on the strength and structure of the jaw. If the condition is left untreated, it will not only cause damage to the gum line, but the teeth as well.

Genetics: Your genetic makeup has a large role in the development of a receding gum line. Those who are predisposed to having a decrease in the jawbone density or periodontal disease have an increased risk for compromised gum tissue.

Trauma: Naturally, trauma can cause damage to the gum tissue. If it is smashed, cut, or suffers another form of injury, it can cause it to pull away from the teeth.

Restoring the Gum Line

To restore your oral health and to prevent future complications, you need to see a dentist to regenerate the gum tissue. After an initial consultation, the underlying cause of the problem will be discovered to create a proactive treatment plan.

In some cases, you may only need to change your oral hygiene habits, such as switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush. However, if periodontal disease is the cause, you will need treatment for the infection with a deep cleaning procedure. In some cases, lasers are used to help regenerate the tissue. No matter the cause, if the damage is severe, you may need gum grafting.
