6 Tips for Preventing Dental Emergencies

Your dentist has many different services to offer in the event of a dental emergency, such as fillings, dental crowns, root canal therapy, and – in the worst-case scenario – extractions. However, no matter how good the emergency care available is, it’s always better not to need it in the first place. The following 6 tips can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy and undamaged so that you can lower your personal risk of needing to take advantage of your dentist’s emergency services.

1. Be Proactive If You Notice Something Wrong

Persistent tooth pain could point towards a cavity or a failing filling. Even if the pain disappears, it could just be a sign that an infection is becoming more advanced. It’s always better to have oral problems examined and treated as soon as possible even if you don’t think they rise to the level of emergency yet. Treating the problem early can help you prevent worse damage later.

2. Maintain an Excellent Oral Hygiene Routine

You should be brushing your teeth two times every day: once when you get up in the morning and once before you go to bed. Brush for at least two minutes per session with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride-based toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every two or three months or as soon as it looks worn and splayed.

3. Reduce the Amount of Sugar in Your Diet

The bacteria in your mouth responsible for tooth decay and gum disease feed on sugar and produce acid as a byproduct. Over time, this acid weakens the enamel and makes it more susceptible to cavities and other kinds of damage. As such, you need to make it a point to limit the amount of sugary snacks you eat.

4. Get a Mouthguard if You Play Sports

If you get hit in the mouth or face while playing sports, a mouthguard can absorb and redistribute the force of the blow so that your teeth aren’t exposed to the worst of it. It’s worth wearing an athletic mouthguard even if you’re not told that you’re required to have one.

5. Talk to Your Dentist About Your Dental Anxieties

Sometimes dental anxieties can make you reluctant to attend regular dental appointments or get the dental care needed to prevent serious dental emergencies. Your dentist can take steps to help you overcome your issue so that your mouth consistently receives the care it requires.

6. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated helps ensure that your body can produce a healthy amount of saliva. You need plenty of saliva to wash away excess food particles and bacteria in order to keep your teeth safe from decay. Furthermore, the minerals in saliva can help strengthen the teeth by replacing the small amounts of material that they lose on a daily basis.

There are additional steps you can take to potentially avoid dental emergencies. Feel free to ask your dentist for suggestions during your next appointment; they can give recommendations based on your daily habits so that you can target the areas where your health is at the most risk.
